Concern Troll

Hi, Bill.

The problem isn’t that the Buffett Rule is necessarily a bad idea. It isn’t that “social Darwinism” is a slander on Republicans. (Heck, it may be the only Darwinism Romney believes in.) The problem is that when Obama thrusts these populist themes to the center of his narrative, he sounds a little desperate. The candidate who ran on hope — promising to transcend bickering and get things done — is in danger of sounding like the candidate of partisan insurgency. Just as Romney was unconvincing as a right-wing scourge, Obama, a man lofty in his visions but realistic in his governance, feels inauthentic playing a plutocrat-bashing firebrand. The role the middle really wants him to play, I think, is president.

Is there any reason he can’t be both?

  1. Shorter Bill Keller: “Don’t raise mah taxes! Cut Social Security instead.”

P.S. FWIW, I think Obama’s pushing of the Buffett Rule is just campaign shenanigans, meself. “The fact is” that it isn’t going to pass Congress, and the Bush-Cheney tax cuts are now the Bush-Cheney-Obama tax cuts.

      • I’d like to believe that too, vs.

I’d also like to believe I can buy a lotto ticket and win millions of dollars.

Unfortunately, the facts do not support either hope.

  2. “Bickering”? He calls the Republicans’ obstructing every judicial appointment, their racist attacks on not only Obama and the administration, but his wife and kids, not to mention every other black politician who isn’t Clarence Thomas, and all the other Beltway shenanigans they’ve been carrying on — he calls that “bickering”? God damn, I hate these people.

  3. “My hunch is that Romney will manage to shake off most of his extremist accouterments, because they never seemed to fit him.”

Were this fairytale to come true, I’m guesstimating that Willard Romney woud wind up with circa twice the votes Nader got in 2000. Since Romney can count & knows this, the exact same Technofascist Warlord Theocracy Menthol Lite™ extremism he’s now winning the primary with will soon be tarted up in happy shiny Joe McSixpack drag in order to woo the more bone-stupid “undecideds” who would otherwise gag on them in their true form. The sparse but influential War Skooter Guerilla Cadres will gleefully shank him in the back at the first whiff of non-nihilist/pro-civilizationalist heresy, & Romney damn well knows that, too.

Bonus “Super-KaDooper Bleeding-Edge Kultschur Hero” points for referencing the coming “battle for Obama’s teleprompter” – you see, it’s incredibly funny, because actually Bill Keller had his fucking (already dormant & assumed to be malignant) sense of originality surgically removed with a turkey baster & an icepick in 2002!

  4. The “I like trees” episode gave me the impression that Romney is abusing prescription drugs. He doesn’t appear to have much of a handle on himself.

A sitting president playing it up for working people and a drug-addled rich man who wants to play POTUS walking around with his head up his ass is NOT two sides of a class war. The primary difference between Obama and Romney are stable vs unstable. The punditry babble-doodles on “Class warfare” is to poli-sci as “Outer Limits” is to physics.

    Reverse the polarity!

I think Romney will all but disappear after the convention- every time he exposes himself to the public, he looks like a huge phony. I think he’s going to trust to his SuperPACs to shit in Obama’s punch bowl, while maintaining a low profile himself. He’s just not likeable.
