Yearnin’

These are the top 5 newish songs in my liberry I find myself gravitating to again and again.

Set Me Free–The Black Keys
Like most of their stuff, it’s just visceral, no-frills, evocative, hard-rocking and sexy as hell.

Better Things–Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
This is one of those songs that ought to have a warning label attached to it because is so instantly goddamn catchy. One hit and you’re a goner.

California Soul Remix–Marlena Shaw and Ya Boy
Couldn’t find the Ya Boy version, but this is an OK approximation. Anyway, this is a masterful remix that should have a “Highly Addictive” warning label attached, much like these remixes.

Charlene II–Stephen Colbert and The Black Belles
It’s a shame Stephen Colbert is such a shitty singer*, because underneath his shitty singing lies the bones of a pretty awesome song, with an amazing bassline and guitar riff.  (Also it’s really funny.)

107 Degrees–Citizen Cope
This song is so languid, so hot. It’s musical equivalent of sitting on a porch in the deep South, letting some of your cool, cool drink soak your shirt.

Your love, your love is 7 feet deep
It’s 107 degrees
And I’m walking cause my life ain’t free
Cause it’s 107 degrees
And your pain is, is killing me
Cause it’s 107 degrees
And I’m walking cause my life ain’t free
Cause it’s 107 degrees

*To be clear, Stephen Colbert is in every other way–A GOD.
